Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal information Duck & Whale collects through duckandwhalemag.com, why, and your rights over it.

Who we are

The data controller is Lee Dean, trading as Duck & Whale, 4 Eastleigh Drive, Belfast BT4 3DX, United Kingdom. Contact: help@duckandwhalemag.com.

What we collect

  • Order details: name, email, phone number, delivery and billing addresses, and what you bought. Card details are handled by our payment providers; we never see or store your full card number.
  • Account and subscription details: login email, subscription status and renewal dates.
  • Newsletter and waitlist sign-ups: your email address and the date you signed up.
  • Messages: anything you send through our contact forms or by email.
  • Browsing information: device and browser type, pages viewed and how you arrived, collected with cookies (see below).

Why we use it, and the legal basis

  • To take, deliver and support your orders and subscriptions (contract).
  • To keep business and tax records (legal obligation).
  • To prevent fraud and keep the site working and secure (legitimate interests).
  • To send newsletters and marketing emails, only if you've opted in (consent). Every email has an unsubscribe link.
  • To measure and improve the site using analytics cookies, only with your permission (consent).

Who we share it with

We never sell your information. We share it only with the services that help us run the shop, under contracts that protect it:

  • Shopify (online store and checkout) and our payment providers (Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe)
  • Seal Subscriptions (subscription management)
  • Klaviyo (email newsletters)
  • Printful (makes and ships printed apparel)
  • Citipost (distributes the current issue and subscriptions) and Royal Mail (delivery)
  • Google Analytics (site statistics, with consent)

Some of these providers store data outside the UK, including in the US and Canada. Where they do, transfers are protected by approved safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or adequacy decisions.

How long we keep it

  • Order records: 6 years, for tax purposes.
  • Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe.
  • Analytics data: up to 26 months.

Cookies

We use essential cookies to run the basket, checkout and region selection. With your permission, we also use analytics and marketing cookies. You can change your choice at any time through the cookie banner or your browser settings.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct or delete your information, object to or restrict how we use it, take a copy of it, and withdraw consent at any time. Email help@duckandwhalemag.com and we'll respond within one month.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
